DENR plans to plant 5 million trees by 2028

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines has started a new program called "Forests For Life." This initiative aims to plant and grow 5 million trees by 2028. The plan focuses on critical areas that need reforestation, which will make the country more resilient to climate change. Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga announced the program during a launch event in Makati City. She highlighted the importance of forests for maintaining ecological balance and supporting people's livelihoods. However, she noted that deforestation and climate change threaten these ecosystems. The program targets six areas: Ilocos Norte, Rizal, Leyte, Bataan, Bukidnon, and Lanao del Norte. These regions have been identified as needing immediate reforestation. Loyzaga believes growing these trees will help combat climate change and regenerate wildlife habitats. DENR Undersecretary Carlos Primo David explained that the program will shift from just planting trees to ensuring they grow and survive for long-term benefits. Trees are crucial for water management and flood prevention, as they help capture rainwater and support groundwater sources. To help these trees thrive, the DENR plans to monitor their growth using satellite technology. This approach will track the trees' progress and identify any issues early on. The DENR is also inviting individuals and businesses to invest PHP100 for each tree. This money will help cover the costs of planting and maintaining the trees for three years, which is essential for their survival. The program aims to restore forests and improve water security in the Philippines, while also contributing to the fight against climate change.
