Denver seeks to host NCAA events again soon
Denver is eager to host more NCAA events, like the women's basketball Final Four and the Frozen Four. NCAA officials are open to this idea and recognize Denver's appeal for major tournaments. Chad Tolliver, who oversees NCAA championships, expressed his fondness for the area, particularly the Avalanche hockey team. However, the University of Denver will host the 2028 Frozen Four in Chicago, not in Denver. Tolliver explained that the venue was not available when they needed it. He emphasized that the NCAA is interested in returning to Denver for major events in the future, except for the men's basketball Final Four, which requires larger venues. Kasey Gengler, an NCAA basketball official, highlighted that having enough hotel space and a major airport are crucial for hosting large tournaments. Denver's capabilities in these areas make it a strong candidate for future events. Ball Arena has hosted a women’s Final Four previously, but the last was in 2012. The last men's basketball regional in Denver occurred in 1996. In 2021, Denver was set to host a men's basketball regional, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to a change in plans. This weekend, Ball Arena is hosting the first and second rounds of the men's tournament, and officials expect to see significant economic benefits from the event. Matthew Payne from the Denver Sports Commission mentioned the region could gain at least $4 million from this weekend's games. There are hopes for future NCAA events, as Ball Arena meets the seating capacity requirements for significant tournaments. The Pioneers, Denver's men’s hockey team, has a proud history, winning the most championships in NCAA hockey history. This reputation may influence future choices for hosting events at Ball Arena.
