Deported woman arrested again for illegal reentry
A 36-year-old Dominican woman, Virginia Basora-Gonzalez, has been arrested again by federal agents in Philadelphia. She was previously deported after being convicted of drug trafficking involving fentanyl. Basora-Gonzalez was taken into custody during a joint operation by ICE, the US Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. She wept during her arrest on March 12, 2025, as authorities moved to reinstate a final order of removal against her. She was first deported in October 2020 after serving part of a 12-month prison sentence. Basora-Gonzalez had pleaded guilty to drug charges in March 2020. It is unclear when she returned to the United States. An informant alerted ICE about her presence on March 7, 2025. Her attorney argued that she should not be detained while awaiting trial. However, prosecutors believe her history of drug trafficking and lack of community ties justify pretrial detention. They noted that she has no spouse or children in the area, which increases the risk of flight. Basora-Gonzalez remains in custody as her case continues in court.
