Deputy killed in crash during pursuit in California
A deputy in Southern California lost his life during a vehicle pursuit on Monday. The deputy, identified as Hector Cuevas Jr., was 36 years old and had served with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for six years. The chase began in Victorville when deputies spotted a stolen car. The driver, 22-year-old Ryan Turner, refused to stop. During the pursuit, Cuevas was involved in a collision with another vehicle that was not fleeing. Sadly, he died at the scene from his injuries. A woman in the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The crash is currently under investigation. Turner eventually abandoned his vehicle and tried to escape but was caught by law enforcement. He faces multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Sheriff Shannon D. Dicus praised Cuevas, describing him as a dedicated family man and a skilled officer. Cuevas is survived by his wife and two children. California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences, highlighting Cuevas' remarkable commitment to his community. In tribute, flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff in his honor.
