Detroit airport plans to open first indoor cigar lounge
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport plans to open a cigar lounge in the McNamara Terminal, the first indoor smoking area at the airport. This proposal has faced criticism from anti-smoking groups concerned about the health risks of secondhand smoke for passengers. Currently, DTW has no indoor smoking areas, only outdoor ones. Dedicated cigar bars are rare in U.S. airports, with none operating post-pandemic. Some airports allow smoking in designated areas, but most remain smoke-free. The proposed lounge would be the only indoor smoking facility at DTW, which could raise air quality concerns. Studies indicate that secondhand smoke can affect air quality near smoking areas, even if they are outdoors.
