Detroit goalie prospects excel in NCAA and CHL

The Detroit Red Wings are looking strong in the goalie department, with promising prospects in college and junior leagues. This season, the team has used several goalies, including Ville Husso, Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, and Petr Mrazek. In the AHL, Sebastian Cossa, an All-Star for the Grand Rapids Griffins, shows great potential. Trey Augustine from Michigan State has been named the Big Ten goalie of the year twice and is performing well this season. Meanwhile, Rudy Guimond is turning heads in the CHL with his record-breaking performance. Augustine, 20, has improved his statistics dramatically this season. His goals-against average dropped from 2.96 to 2.02, and his save percentage improved from .915 to .927. Michigan State is currently the top team in NCAA hockey and will play against Ohio State in the Big Ten championship this Saturday. Augustine, who was picked 41st by Detroit in the 2023 draft, is also a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the best NCAA player. There is a chance he might turn pro after this season, likely joining the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. Cossa will probably stay with Grand Rapids for another season, as the Red Wings have Mrazek and Talbot under contract for 2025-26. Guimond, drafted in the sixth round, has had an impressive start, going 15-0-0 in the CHL with a 1.52 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage. He is set to play at Yale next season.
