Devgad Hapus mangoes receive UID seals to ensure authenticity
Devgad Taluka Mango Growers Cooperative Society Limited has introduced a new system to help consumers identify real Devgad Alphonso mangoes, also known as Hapus. This comes as the mango season begins, and consumers often struggle to tell genuine mangoes from fake ones. Every authentic Devgad Alphonso mango will now carry a special tamper-proof UID seal. This initiative aims to eliminate counterfeit mangoes in the market and ensure that customers receive only the high-quality fruit that Devgad is known for. Omkar M Sapre, a board member of the cooperative society, explained that over 80% of mangoes sold as Devgad Hapus today are not from the region. Many inferior mangoes from other areas are sold under this name, hurting local farmers economically. The society, which holds the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Devgad Alphonso mangoes, is working with Mumbai-based Sun Solutions to implement the new TP seal system. This technology will help authenticate each mango, rebuild consumer trust, and protect the legacy of these unique fruits. The cooperative has warned traders and retailers against selling non-GI mangoes as Devgad Alphonso. They have promised to take strict action against anyone found misrepresenting the product.
