Disney canceled plans for a Marvel video game universe
Disney once had plans to create a connected universe for Marvel video games, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This project was known as the "MGU." Alex Irvine, the writer of Marvel Rivals, recently discussed these plans on The Fourth Curtain podcast. Irvine mentioned that the MGU was meant to link different Marvel games and would have shared elements like stories, characters, and possibly even original content. He and podcast host Alex Seropian felt frustrated when Disney decided not to fund the project, despite their excitement over the many ideas they had. The creators believed the project could enrich players' experiences by allowing them to move between games and explore a central hub. However, the complexities of maintaining consistency across multiple platforms and game creators may have contributed to Disney's decision to abandon the idea. Currently, the Marvel video game universe remains diverse and separate, with titles produced by different companies like Sony and Square Enix. While a fully interconnected universe is unlikely, some crossovers are still happening, such as between Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-Man and Wolverine games.
