Disney+ EMEA focuses on quality scripted content success
Lee Mason, who leads scripted originals for Disney+ in EMEA, feels optimistic about the platform’s recent successes. Mason, who previously worked as a commissioning editor for Channel 4, highlighted the impact of popular shows like "Rivals" and "A Thousand Blows." "Rivals," based on Jilly Cooper's novel, has been a hit since its debut in October. It features characters like Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham, set in a fictional English county during the 1980s. The show mixes drama and romance, and while it has raunchy elements, Mason believes they serve a purpose in character development. Initially, Mason was hesitant about "Rivals." However, after reading the pilot script, he quickly changed his mind. He emphasizes that success is unpredictable and often reflects a team’s pride in their work, regardless of viewership. Mason is also excited about the new series "A Thousand Blows," featuring a Jamaican boxer in 19th-century London. He appreciates the depth of characters and their vulnerabilities, which sets it apart. Disney+ focuses on creating strong character-driven stories across genres, making casting crucial. Mason uses his family's interests as a guide. If they approve, he feels confident in a show's appeal. Discussing risk, Mason explained that being daring does not always mean being controversial. Surprising elements in tone or casting can also attract audience interest. Upcoming shows include a drama about the 2005 police shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes. Mason clarifies that, while it touches on significant issues, the goal is to tell an untold story rather than to spark conversations. Mason noted that the team often declines projects, aiming for quality content that resonates with Disney+ viewers. He remains enthusiastic about local productions in various countries, emphasizing that connecting with regional audiences is vital while also aiming for broader appeal.
