Disney's Marvel Gaming Universe plan didn't receive funding
Once upon a time, there was an idea for a Marvel Gaming Universe. This concept aimed to connect all Marvel video games, similar to what the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has achieved with movies and TV shows. However, this idea did not receive funding from Disney and never came to fruition. In a recent podcast, Alexander Seropian and Alex Irvine discussed the proposed gaming universe. They both worked on Marvel games and were involved in the MGU plan. Irvine said that there was excitement about the possibilities, including linking games, comics, and original content. Yet, the project failed to secure financial support from Disney. Seropian explained that he had pushed for this initiative early on, even before the MCU became successful. Despite their enthusiasm, the complexity of the idea turned off some Disney executives. Questions about how the gaming universe would differ from the comics and films caused concerns. Today, Marvel games remain separate, with titles like Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy existing in their own worlds. Fans now wonder if upcoming games, like Marvel's Wolverine, will connect to Spider-Man. The hope for a unified Marvel Gaming Universe remains just a vision of what could have been.
