Distribution of landfill funds to Schuylkill municipalities delayed
After 35 years since the North Schuylkill Landfill closed, almost $3.5 million was set to be distributed to the municipalities that operated it. However, this plan has faced delays due to disagreements on how the money should be split among the towns. The landfill association’s board held a meeting in September 2023, where 16 out of 17 member municipalities agreed to an equal distribution of funds. Each municipality was expected to receive about $204,000 from the landfill's remaining funds, along with a portion from the transfer station funds. Frackville, one of the municipalities, has raised concerns over the distribution. They argue that four member municipalities, which were not charter members of the landfill, should only receive a share from the transfer station funds. Frackville's solicitor stated that only the original members should receive full shares from the landfill funds. In response to the disagreement, Frackville, along with others, called for another meeting to discuss the issue. The association president, David Briggs, stated they do not plan to hold another meeting, arguing that the vote on the distribution was already finalized. Briggs suggested that the remaining funds can stay in the bank until all municipalities agree. Some municipalities are eager to receive the funds, especially smaller communities that face financial difficulties. Officials from these areas emphasize the need for a resolution, as they rely on these payments for their operations. While discussions continue, the final decision on the fund distribution remains uncertain.
