Divar residents protest Bollywood film shoot congestion

Divar is currently lively as a Bollywood film crew has arrived on the eastern side of the island. Some residents are excited about the film being shot there, but many are protesting against the permissions granted and the difficulties faced by locals. The ferry point is now busier than usual, with many cars parked on rough roads in Malar. The island, known for its beauty, includes Goltim-Navelim and St Mathias panchayats. About 20 houses and the local church area have been transformed for the shoot, giving the location a festive atmosphere. Residents renting out their properties and those working as extras are expected to earn some money from the film. However, not everyone is happy. Former sarpanch Prasad Harmalkar expressed concerns, saying he previously helped pass a resolution to ban filming in the area. He noted that private properties are still being used for the shoot, causing inconvenience on the narrow, dug-up roads. The panchayat did not discuss filming permissions in a recent meeting, according to member Swapnil Bomkar. The sarpanch did give oral permission for the film crew to use the local sports complex, but after complaints from residents, the panchayat ordered the crew to leave within 24 hours. The residents depend on ferries to access the mainland, and Harmalkar mentioned that traffic is already heavy, complicating life for workers and students. Additionally, the Sao Mathias panchayat has denied a request for approval from the Entertainment Society of Goa, citing concerns about vehicle obstruction and disturbances caused by film crew security. Despite this, the film crew has not yet vacated the sports complex.
