DMK MP criticizes unfair delimitation impacting Tamil Nadu

A member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), P. Wilson, spoke in the Rajya Sabha on March 19, 2025, about the upcoming delimitation of Parliamentary constituencies. He described it as a “political coup” that unfairly benefits states that have not managed their populations effectively. Wilson stated that delimitation, planned for 2026, would reward states with high population growth, like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, while punishing those like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which have successfully stabilized their populations. The DMK is pushing for a detailed discussion on this issue in both houses of Parliament, but the government has not yet agreed to hold such a debate. He pointed out that if the freeze on delimitation is not extended by 2026, the new distribution of seats based on population growth could lead to significant changes. States like Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh could gain over 150 seats, while Tamil Nadu and its neighboring states would only gain 35 seats combined. Wilson stressed that this would reduce Tamil Nadu's representation while increasing that of states with higher birth rates. Wilson argued that this situation rewards states that have not followed family planning policies, asking why those areas would receive more political power. He believes that such a change undermines the efforts of states that have focused on population control and represented a betrayal of their commitment to national policy.
