Doctors and detransitioners claim malpractice in gender treatment
A Texas surgeon, Dr. Eithan Haim, raised concerns about medical practices related to treating gender dysphoria in young people. He claims some doctors fail to recognize the harm caused by prescribing hormones or performing surgeries. Haim believes these doctors need to confront the reality of their decisions, which can create long-term medical issues for vulnerable youth. Haim recently participated in a panel on Capitol Hill to discuss the experiences of detransitioners—those who have reversed or halted their gender transition procedures. This event was part of Detrans Awareness Day, which seeks to highlight the potential negative effects of gender medical practices and ideology. During the panel, other experts expressed skepticism that doctors would change their views on “gender-affirming care” without public pressure. Dr. Patrick Lappert noted that while hormone treatments can sometimes be reversed, surgeries often cannot, leading to serious complications for patients. He emphasized that such procedures may result in lifelong health problems. Detransitioners shared their personal stories, often linked to past trauma. Laura Becker recounted emotional abuse from her father, which contributed to her struggles with self-worth. She felt misunderstood by her therapists, who diagnosed her as transgender without addressing her deeper issues. Forrest Smith described how early exposure to online pornography influenced his gender dysphoria. He believed transitioning would help him escape his self-loathing, but later regretted decisions made in a hurry. Abel Garcia also felt rushed into surgeries without proper consideration of his past trauma. Many who shared their stories emphasized that their mental health needs were overlooked. These individuals believe more attention should be paid to underlying psychological issues before proceeding with treatments related to gender identity.
