Filmotor, a documentary company based in Prague, has acquired the rights to "Shifting Baselines," directed by Julien Elie. This documentary will have its world premiere at the Visions du Réel festival, a prominent documentary event. Filmotor's CEO, Michaela Čajková, expressed the urgent need to share this film that explores the impact of SpaceX on Boca Chica, Texas. Boca Chica is home to SpaceX’s Starbase, a facility for testing and producing Elon Musk's Starship rocket. The area is also near a national wildlife refuge that protects various species. The documentary highlights the environmental consequences of SpaceX’s activities, particularly the debris left from failed rocket launches. Elie began filming in Boca Chica in 2022 and found it to be a visually striking place for a documentary. He interviews people from diverse backgrounds who share their concerns about the world, including the pandemic and environmental issues. The film draws parallels between past colonization and the current push to explore Mars, suggesting that some view it as an escape from Earth’s problems. The film also features scientists warning about the dangers of space debris and its effects on the environment. Elie's documentary uses a black-and-white aesthetic to create a dramatic feel, emphasizing the history and seriousness of humanity’s quest for space exploration. "Shifting Baselines" will be showcased at the Visions du Réel festival from April 4 to 13 in Nyon, Switzerland. The documentary is produced by Elie and Montreal's GreenGround Productions.
