Documentary "The Encampments" about Gaza activism releases March 28
A new documentary titled "The Encampments" is set to be released in U.S. theaters. Produced by Macklemore, it focuses on the Columbia University Gaza Solidarity Encampment. This movement began in April 2024 when students protested against the war in Gaza. The film will premiere on March 25 at the CPH:DOX Film Festival in Copenhagen. It will then hit theaters in the U.S. on March 28, starting at the Angelika Film Center in New York, with plans for a nationwide rollout. The documentary features stories from student activists, including Mahmoud Khalil. He was recently detained by immigration agents amid a crackdown on protesting students under President Trump. A judge has intervened to prevent his deportation while legal issues are being resolved. Directors Kei Pritsker and Michael T Workman aim for the film to highlight the courage of young activists. They express that it challenges mainstream media portrayals by capturing the emotions and motivations behind the protests. Macklemore spoke about the historical importance of student activism. He noted that movements led by students have always played a key role in fighting for justice. The production is a collaboration between BreakThrough News and Watermelon Pictures, with an emphasis on sharing perspectives rooted in Palestinian culture.
