DOH reports lower leptospirosis deaths despite rise in cases in the Philippines

The Department of Health (DOH) reported fewer deaths from leptospirosis this year compared to late October and early November 2023. The case fatality rate dropped to 9.12% in 2024 from 10.83% last year, despite an increase in cases. From October 27 to November 9, 2024, there were 594 leptospirosis cases, significantly higher than the 234 cases recorded in the same period last year. Overall, 7,234 cases have been reported in 2024, a 19% increase from 2023. The DOH is also monitoring respiratory infections, noting 161,555 flu-like cases as of November 23, down from 196,045 last year.
