Dollar General closing nearly 100 stores by 2026
Dollar General plans to close nearly 100 stores by 2026. This move comes after a review of the company's store performance. In total, 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf locations will shut down. The company announced these closures alongside its fourth-quarter earnings report. Dollar General is evaluating stores based on their current and future performance, as well as operating conditions. Despite the closures, Dollar General aims to open 575 new stores in the U.S. and up to 15 in Mexico. They also plan to remodel over 4,000 existing locations. The closures represent less than 1% of Dollar General's total number of stores. The company has not released a specific list of which stores will close but stated the process will start in May. This decision follows a broader trend of retail stores closing around the country. Other companies like Macy's, Kohl's, Joann Fabrics, and Forever 21 have also announced store closures recently. However, unlike Joann and Forever 21, which filed for bankruptcy, Dollar General will keep most of its locations open.
