$15 million will support staffing and funding for nonprofits
The Samueli Foundation is giving $15 million to help non-profit organizations in Orange County. This decision came after a survey revealed several challenges that these groups are facing. More than 600 nonprofits participated in the survey. They highlighted issues like the need for better leadership and financial support for projects. Many groups struggle with staffing and cannot pay competitive salaries, which affects their ability to retain employees. At an event on March 18 at UC Irvine, foundation leaders discussed the survey results with nonprofit officials. Lindsey Spindle, president of Samueli Family Philanthropies, emphasized the need for data-driven insights to reshape funding practices. The $15 million investment will support three main initiatives. These include $5 million for leadership development programs, $5 million for capital project grants, and another $5 million aimed at reducing financial barriers for nonprofits. Nonprofits expressed a strong desire for collaboration, although many face challenges that hinder partnerships. About half of the organizations reported having no cash reserves or credit lines, raising concerns about their financial stability. Elizabeth Andrade from 211OC noted that the survey's results were alarming, but the desire for collaboration among nonprofits offers some hope. Madelynn Hirneise, CEO of Families Forward, mentioned the importance of viewing nonprofits as businesses that need proper infrastructure to succeed. Overall, nonprofit leaders in Orange County are encouraged by the support from the Samueli Foundation and the Orange County Community Foundation. They believe that this investment will help strengthen their organizations and improve services for the community despite current uncertainties.
