$4 million investment for Central New York market upgrades
Onondaga County is investing $4 million to improve the Central New York Regional Market. County Executive Ryan McMahon announced the plan, which aims to attract more visitors and better support local farmers. The upgrades will include a "ghost kitchen" for food entrepreneurs, a new entrance on Park Street, and renovations to the historic C-Shed building. McMahon emphasized the importance of boosting agriculture, hospitality, and tourism in the local economy. The improvements follow a state audit that criticized the market’s financial management and led to new leadership. McMahon noted that the $4 million investment is part of a larger $70 million plan for government aid, mostly expected to come from the state. The upgrades will enhance the market, which spans 50 acres and serves as a venue for seasonal stalls, wholesale vendors, and other businesses. Recently, there's also been a plan to bring concerts back to the market. Key projects in McMahon's plan include: - **Ghost Kitchen**: Up to $800,000 is set to create a kitchen space for multiple food entrepreneurs, expanding the local food business. - **Entrance Improvements**: McMahon plans to spend $950,000 to enhance the Park Street entrance with better signage, making it more attractive and easier to navigate. - **C-Shed Renovations**: A $2 million investment will modernize the nearly 90-year-old building, improving its façade, electrical system, and vendor stalls. These upgrades aim to transform the market into a more welcoming and productive space for both visitors and farmers.
