Domestic workers in Mumbai criticize Urban Company's service
Domestic workers and labor unions are criticizing Urban Company's new service, which allows users to hire house help in just 15 minutes. This service, called ‘Insta Help’, is available in selected areas of Mumbai, starting at very low rates of ₹49 per hour. The Domestic Workers’ Rights Union (DWRU) and Stree Jagruti Samiti have raised concerns about this offer, calling it "exploitative and dehumanising." They argue that it does not promote decent wages or working conditions for domestic workers, who often face issues of gender, caste, and class discrimination. The unions also questioned whether the company would take responsibility for any workplace abuse or accidents involving the workers. Previously, other labor organizations like the Indian Federation of App Based Transport Workers and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union also expressed their concerns. Leaders from these groups described the situation as creating a high-pressure environment for workers, which can lead to exploitation and job insecurity. Urban Company responded by stating that their service partners could earn between ₹150 to ₹180 per hour. They also mentioned that workers would receive benefits such as free health insurance and coverage for accidents while on the job.
