Dorset drivers face increased parking charges starting April 3
Motorists in Dorset will face higher parking charges starting April 3, 2025. The new fees are set to increase between 50p an hour to as much as £30 for a full day's parking. This change comes despite public protests against the proposed increases. Dorset Council had previously paused plans to add evening and overnight parking charges due to public backlash. However, those night-time fees will still apply in many areas under the new rules. Council leaders say the increases are necessary due to rising inflation and cuts in government funding. Cllr Jon Andrews, who oversees place services for Dorset Council, encouraged residents to apply for parking permits. These permits could help save money on the new rates. He noted that, with a permit, daily parking costs could drop significantly. Without a permit, parking could cost as much as £6.30 a day. The maximum daily charge for regular vehicles will be £15.80. Charges will be in effect from 8 am to 6 pm, with free parking available overnight. However, in Chesil, a private agreement will allow fees of up to £20 for a 24-hour parking period. Additionally, vehicles over 4.8 meters will incur charges over £30, affecting larger vehicles like motorhomes and lorries.
