The Vancouver Police Department reports positive results from a recent crime crackdown in the Downtown Eastside. This effort, named Task Force Barrage, began in mid-February and aims to combat organized and violent crime. The city invested $5 million into this initiative, which features more uniformed police officers, ongoing investigations into gangs, and stronger partnerships with the community. Insp. Gary Hiar, in charge of the district, noted the increased police presence has made a difference. He said there were no reported robberies last week. Police data shows a clear improvement. In the first month of the task force, officers responded to 4,760 calls. They seized 197 weapons, which is a significant increase compared to previous months. Officers also executed 153 arrest warrants and made 204 arrests. Reported assaults in the area decreased as well. On average, assaults dropped from four per day to three. Additionally, assaults involving weapons fell by 30 percent. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim first announced additional police presence in January as part of a broader plan to improve the Downtown Eastside, which includes a freeze on new supportive housing.
