DPWH given deadline to investigate Isabela bridge collapse

Malacañang has given the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) one month to complete its investigation into the recent bridge collapse in Isabela province. The bridge, known as the Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge, collapsed on February 27, disrupting travel in the area. In a press conference, press officer Claire Castro rejected calls for the preventive suspension of DPWH officials. She stated that such action would be premature while the investigation is ongoing. DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan has formed a special committee to look into the incident, with a report due by April 25. The collapse of the P1.2 billion bridge, which crosses the Cagayan River, was caused when a truck carrying boulders attempted to cross it. Following the collapse, motorists have had to rely on an old overflow bridge that had been used during the bridge’s lengthy construction process. Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, chair of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee, expressed disappointment with the DPWH's handling of the situation. He indicated that accountability is needed and suggested that Bonoan should face consequences. He also questioned the DPWH’s statement that the bridge was “overstressed,” noting that there are differing opinions on whether the collapse was due to design flaws or substandard construction. Castro emphasized that it is not currently necessary to impose preventive suspensions on DPWH officials, especially since the investigation is still unfolding. She affirmed that anyone found responsible will be held accountable.
