Drew Pomeranz released by Mariners, becomes free agent
Drew Pomeranz's attempt to return to Major League Baseball has come to an end. The Seattle Mariners released the former Boston Red Sox pitcher on Sunday. Pomeranz is now a free agent. The 36-year-old lefty signed a minor league contract with Seattle in November, hoping to revive his career. This spring, he recorded 10 strikeouts in 72⁄3 innings but was unable to secure a spot in the Mariners' bullpen. Pomeranz has not pitched in the major leagues since 2021 due to injuries. However, he played nine innings in 2024 with the Los Angeles Dodgers' Triple-A team. He was a key player for the Red Sox from 2016 to 2019, helping the team win a franchise-record 108 games and the World Series in 2018. His career included a rough start in 2019 with the San Francisco Giants, followed by a trade to the Milwaukee Brewers, where he excelled with a 2.39 ERA. Pomeranz signed a four-year deal with the San Diego Padres in 2020 but appeared in only 47 games and missed the entire 2022 season due to injury. It is unclear if other teams will show interest in signing the 11-year veteran.
