Driver charged with vehicular homicide in New Jersey crash
A driver in New Jersey has been charged with vehicular homicide after a crash that killed a passenger in another vehicle. The incident took place on March 4 in North Plainfield. Kavon Powell-Coleman, 35, was arrested on March 13. The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office announced he faces charges of second-degree vehicular homicide and fourth-degree assault by auto. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Greenbrook Road and Duer Street. Upon arrival, police found Powell-Coleman's SUV in the road and a pickup truck on a nearby lawn. Both drivers reported minor injuries and declined medical treatment. However, two passengers in the pickup were taken to the hospital. Victor Manuel Amaya Ramos, 68, later died from his injuries. Investigators reviewed surveillance video and concluded that Powell-Coleman was speeding on Duer Street, which has a 25 mph limit. The pickup truck was traveling on Greenbrook Road, which does not have a stop sign where the two roads meet. In addition to the criminal charges, Powell-Coleman received several motor vehicle summonses. He is being held at Somerset County Jail while awaiting a detention hearing.
