Driver convicted for SUV attack on pedestrians in Cardiff
A driver in Cardiff has been found guilty of dangerously assaulting two pedestrians after a dispute over an Airbnb rental. The incident occurred when 33-year-old Johnathan Newbury drove his SUV into Ryan Jones and Abdalrhman Ali, sending them flying through the air. The confrontation stemmed from a double booking at an Airbnb property. Newbury and another man, Elliott Fiteni, had been staying at the location when Jones and Ali arrived. After a heated argument, Newbury chased the two men with a machete and subsequently struck them with his vehicle. In court, Ryan Jones suffered injuries to his pelvis and foot, while Abdalrhman Ali lost consciousness and sustained injuries to his ribs and jaw. Prosecutors described the scene as chaotic, with Newbury and Fiteni shouting threats before the attack. CCTV footage captured Newbury's SUV speeding towards the victims. Both Jones and Ali were left injured but, fortunately, their injuries were not as severe as they could have been. Newbury was cleared of attempted murder but found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and other charges, with sentencing scheduled for April 11. Fiteni was acquitted of all charges.
