Driver had inadequate sleep before fatal Lake Pukaki crash
A car crash near Lake Pukaki last year resulted in the deaths of four people, including the driver. The driver, Megat Ashman Aquif bin Megat Irman Jefni, was found to have only three hours of sleep the night before the accident. During the drive, a passenger even gave him a neck massage to help keep him awake. However, he still lost control of his Mitsubishi and crossed the centerline. This led to a collision with a Lexus traveling in the opposite direction. Coroner Alexandra Cunninghame said fatigue played a significant role in the crash. Megat, aged 21, and one of his passengers, 20-year-old Adlina Alisa Wan, both died in the incident. Additionally, the front-seat passenger of the Lexus, 85-year-old Gavin James William Beere, was also killed. A crash investigator noted that Megat may have experienced a "microsleep" just before the crash.
