Drivers face £617 annual costs for unexpected repairs
Motorists in the UK are facing high costs for unexpected car repairs, averaging £617 per year. This increase has left many drivers struggling financially, with 60% reporting surprise repair bills for their main vehicle. The issue appears to be linked to deteriorating road conditions. A recent report shows that potholes are causing significant damage, with 64% of unexpected repair costs attributed to tyre issues. Brake repairs account for another 24%, while 20% of drivers had to replace suspension parts due to pothole damage. Recent data from the Asphalt Industry Alliance indicated that the cost to repair local roads in England and Wales has climbed to £17 billion. This year, 56% of garages expect customers to delay necessary repairs to avoid high costs, up from 54% last year. Younger drivers, especially those between 17 and 24, are particularly affected. Many are postponing repairs due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Industry experts warn that repair costs could rise again this year due to inflation and part shortages. Despite these challenges, many garages are trying to absorb rising costs to help customers. However, the overall outlook remains concerning for drivers who rely heavily on their vehicles.
