Drones to assist Sherpas on Mount Everest

nytimes.com

Nepali Sherpas, who carry heavy loads for climbers on Mount Everest, might get some relief this climbing season. Starting next month, expedition companies plan to test drones that can lift loads weighing up to 35 pounds. These drones can quickly transport items to high altitudes. What usually takes Sherpas seven hours to carry can now be done in just 15 minutes by drone. This includes not only gear for climbers but also ladders used for climbing routes and waste removal. The aim is to make the Sherpas' jobs safer. As climate change causes snowmelt and makes climbing conditions more dangerous, drones could help reduce the risk of accidents. Tshering Sherpa, from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, supports this technology, stating it makes the Sherpas' tasks more efficient. Drones are still being tested, with two donated by a Chinese manufacturer. If successful, this pilot project could encourage more investment in drones, which may ultimately lower operational costs for expedition agencies.
