Durham's derelict pool site may soon see redevelopment
A former swimming pool in Durham may be redeveloped into new recreational spaces. The outdoor gym and play area are among ideas being considered. The site, known as the old Baths at Elvet Waterside, closed in 2008. Plans to turn it into a university business school were abandoned. Durham County Council is now working on a new vision for the area. Councillor Elizabeth Scott noted that the university owns the building and will decide its future as part of a broader plan. The swimming pool originally opened in 1932 but was closed when the Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre was built. Since then, the site has faced vandalism and neglect. Councillor David Hall expressed a desire to see the site properly transformed. He suggested the council might even need to buy the site back from Durham University. Scott mentioned that details about the new plans and a public consultation are expected later this year. However, the university's intentions for the site are still uncertain. A spokesperson said that any future plans would need to go through official planning processes, including public consultation.
