Duterte's arrest sparks hope for justice in Philippines
Bishop Gerardo Alminaza from Negros Occidental has expressed hope following the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte. He believes this development offers comfort to families who lost loved ones during the controversial war on drugs. Bishop Alminaza stated that the arrest marks a "glimmer of hope" and a potential step toward justice. He emphasized the pain caused by the state-sponsored killings that occurred during Duterte's presidency, which lasted from 2016 to 2022. The bishop recounted personal experiences of mourning victims, including activists and a young child killed in a flawed drug operation. He highlighted the need for accountability, saying it should serve as a warning to future leaders against human rights abuses. Alminaza criticized those who still support Duterte’s violent methods, arguing that they are blinded by misconceptions about solving drug problems. He called for a reevaluation of values and reaffirmed the Church's role in combating injustice. He also noted ongoing violence in rural areas, expressing concern about military actions in Negros Island and other regions. Duterte was arrested on March 11 under a warrant from the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity linked to the drug war.
