Early colorectal cancer screening emphasized in Tamil Nadu
Doctors are emphasizing the importance of screening for colorectal cancer to ensure early detection and treatment. This type of cancer affects the large intestine and is becoming a significant concern in India. While it commonly impacts individuals aged 50 and older, about one-third of cases occur in those aged 40 to 50. Men are more likely to be affected than women. K.R. Palaniswamy, president of the Tamil Nadu Gastroenterologist Trust, stated that awareness about colon cancer is low. He pointed out that early diagnosis is crucial since the disease is treatable. In the U.S., screenings like colonoscopy are mandatory for people aged 45 and older. The Tamil Nadu Gastroenterologist Trust and Apollo Hospitals will host a ‘Colon Cancer Symposium 2025’ on March 22. Statistics show that one in 10,000 people develop bowel cancer in India. Alarmingly, two out of three diagnosed patients die within a year due to late diagnosis. A study in Tamil Nadu found that 1,200 colorectal cancer patients from public and private hospitals were analyzed, revealing several risk factors. Many of these patients were smokers, alcohol consumers, or obese. Despite common beliefs, most patients came from lower socio-economic backgrounds without access to adequate screening and treatment. Dr. N. Thirumoorthi explained that a simple stool test can help detect colon cancer early. If the result is positive, further investigation with a colonoscopy can follow. Experts shared that colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer in India but has a high cure rate if caught early. Advances such as artificial intelligence are being used in colonoscopy to improve detection of polyps and other abnormalities. Hospital leaders stressed the need for better preventive healthcare measures to combat this rising health issue.
