Early diagnosis crucial for colon cancer treatment success

Experts gathered on March 22, 2025, for the Colon Cancer Symposium 2025 to discuss the importance of early diagnosis in treating colon cancer. K. R. Palaniswamy, the president of Tamil Nadu Gastroenterologist Trust, emphasized that early detection is crucial for effective treatment and cure. The symposium featured discussions on prevention, management, and treatment of colon cancer. N. Ram, from The Hindu Group, kicked off the event with an inaugural speech. The participants also showcased findings from a colorectal study by the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Tamil Nadu chapter. Attendees learned about fecal occult screening and watched a live demonstration on advanced techniques for early colon cancer detection. This demonstration was led by international experts Michael Bourke from Westmead Hospital in Sydney and Evelien Dekker from the University of Amsterdam. Additionally, there was a session on the use of Artificial Intelligence in colonoscopy, presented by D. Nageshwar Reddy, chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology. The symposium also covered the multidisciplinary approach to managing advanced colon cancer, involving various specialists like oncologists and gastroenterologists. Several prominent healthcare leaders contributed to the opening session, including Col. S. Krishnan and Shyam Varadarajulu. The event aimed to enhance awareness and knowledge about colon cancer and its early detection among healthcare professionals and the community.
