Earth captures temporary mini moon as asteroid 2024 PT5 orbits for two months
Earth has captured a new temporary companion, Asteroid 2024 PT5, which is about the size of a bus. It will orbit Earth for roughly two months before leaving on November 25. The mini moon is not visible to the naked eye and requires advanced telescopes for observation. It was first identified in August by scientists in Spain and is part of the Arjuna asteroid belt. Asteroid 2024 PT5 is expected to pass by Earth again in 2055. Scientists continue to monitor such objects to better understand the solar system.
