Earth to capture small asteroid as temporary second moon this weekend
phys.org —
Earth will capture a small asteroid, named 2024 PT5, this weekend, according to NASA. The asteroid will orbit Earth in a horseshoe path for about two months before leaving Earth's gravitational pull. The capture will begin on September 29 at 3:54 PM EDT and end on November 25 at 11:43 AM EDT. 2024 PT5 is part of the Arjuna asteroid belt and poses no threat to Earth. Unlike the moon, 2024 PT5 is too small and dim to be seen with amateur telescopes. It measures about 37 feet wide, compared to the moon's diameter of 2,159 miles.
