Earth to welcome temporary mini moon 2024 PT5 tonight
ndtv.com —
Tonight, Earth will temporarily capture a small object called "2024 PT5," measuring about ten meters in diameter. It will orbit Earth for approximately 53 days before leaving the solar system. This mini moon is too small to be seen with the naked eye and is 350,000 times smaller than the Moon. It was discovered on August 7, 2024, by NASA's ATLAS system and is being monitored by India's ISRO. "2024 PT5" is linked to the Arjuna group of asteroids, named after a hero from India's Mahabharata. It is expected to return periodically, with its next appearance anticipated in about a year.
