Earth to welcome temporary mini-moon starting Sunday
Earth will soon have a temporary companion. Starting Sunday, an asteroid named 2024?PT5 will be captured by Earth's gravity, orbiting the planet until November 25. This asteroid is about 33 feet wide and is classified as a "mini-moon." 2024?PT5 was discovered in August through a NASA-funded detection system. Unlike previous mini-moons, this one will have a shorter visit, completing just one loop around Earth before continuing its journey through space. Earth has captured asteroids before, but they usually pass by without orbiting. The last notable mini-moon, RH120, orbited for a year before leaving in 2007. Scientists continue to study near-Earth objects to learn more about their origins.
