Earth welcomes temporary mini-moon 2024 PT5 for two-month visit
Earth has gained a new temporary companion, a mini-moon named Asteroid 2024 PT5. Detected on August 7, this 33-foot-wide asteroid will orbit Earth for about two months, until November 25, 2024. 2024 PT5 comes from the Arjuna asteroid belt and will not complete a full orbit. Instead, it will be slightly altered by Earth's gravity before continuing its journey through the solar system. Advanced telescopes can observe the mini-moon, but it is too dim for naked-eye viewing. Amateur telescopes will struggle to track it due to its small size and fast movement.
