Earth's mini-moon 2024 PT5 to appear in the sky starting September 29
A small asteroid, named 2024 PT5, will become Earth's "second moon" from September 29 to November 25. This mini-moon, about 33 feet wide, was discovered by NASA's Atlas on August 7 and will orbit Earth temporarily. The asteroid is too small and dull to be seen with the naked eye or standard telescopes. Professional equipment will be needed to observe it, but many images are expected to be shared online as it moves across the sky. 2024 PT5 will pass Earth at a distance of about 2.8 million miles. It will not complete a full orbit but will be influenced by Earth's gravity before continuing on its path.
