East Chicago teen charged with murder of 17-year-old

A 16-year-old from East Chicago has been charged with the murder of 17-year-old Justin Charleston. The teen faces multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder, along with two gun enhancements that could increase his prison sentence. The shooting occurred on March 14 at Lakeside Gardens Apartments. Police found Charleston with multiple gunshot wounds and discovered several 9-mm casings nearby. Witnesses reported hearing 5-6 shots fired. The alleged shooter was identified through security footage and a police lineup. He reportedly expressed remorse to a relative after the incident, stating, “I made a big mistake.” An initial court hearing is set for Monday.
