MANTUA — A new attraction called the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum is set to open on March 29 at 66 Million Mosasaur Way. This facility includes a quarry that dates back 66 million years, offering a glimpse into the ancient sea floor and the creatures that once lived there. Highlights of the museum include a huge skeleton of a mosasaur, an aquatic reptile. The $75 million complex aims to engage younger audiences. Visitors can explore the museum and dig for fossils in the quarry from May through October. Rowan University President Ali Houshmand believes the park will have a significant impact beyond Gloucester County. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasizing that this attraction will draw visitors from across the country. The museum's journey began in 2003 when paleontologist Ken Lacovara discovered the Mantua quarry. He collaborated with local officials to raise awareness and support for the site. Initially, a community event drew around 1,600 attendees, far exceeding expectations. Eventually, Rowan University purchased the 123-acre property for $2 million, and Lacovara now serves as the museum's executive director. The quarry is a rich source of fossils, having produced over 100,000 specimens from more than 100 extinct species. Many of these fossils are from marine life, though some land-dwelling dinosaur fossils have been found as well. The museum will feature dinosaur sculptures, live animal exhibits, and a dinosaur-themed playground to attract families and school groups. Ric and Jean Edelman, who donated $25 million to the project, believe that excitement about science begins with interests in stars and dinosaurs. Admission prices are set at $24 for children ages 3 to 12 and $29 for older visitors. A dig experience costs $25 with museum admission or $40 by itself. "It just fills our hearts," Jean Edelman said, reflecting on the memories the museum will create for visitors.
