Eden Park and Te Tōangaroa projects need public funding

nzherald.co.nz

The competition to decide Auckland's main stadium has ended without a clear winner. Both proposed projects, Eden Park and Te Tōangaroa, are not financially viable without public assistance. Eden Park needs $110 million from the Government to begin upgrades. While its plans to increase capacity to 60,000 and add a retractable roof are technically possible, funding remains a major issue. On the other hand, Te Tōangaroa’s proposal does not meet the required technical or commercial standards. However, the project aims to begin acquiring land over the next year. The city’s council will discuss these proposals on Thursday. This comes nearly two years after Mayor Wayne Brown started the search for a new main stadium for Auckland.
