Edinburgh University staff may strike over job cuts
A recent ballot at Edinburgh University shows that 75% of staff are prepared to strike over potential compulsory redundancies. The University and College Union (UCU) reported a 59% turnout, with many also willing to take other forms of action. University principal Sir Peter Mathieson stated that the institution faces a £140 million financial gap over the next 18 months. He indicated that all options, including job cuts, are being considered to address the financial situation. UCU members at Dundee University are already on strike for similar reasons. The union argues that the proposed cuts at Edinburgh are excessive, especially since the university is currently in surplus.
