Eighteen UK bank branches closing in April 2025

Eighteen bank branches are closing in April, contributing to a total of 88 closures in the first quarter of 2025. This means that one branch will close every other day during the month. Banks affected include NatWest, Lloyds, Barclays, and Halifax. Halifax is closing the most branches, with eight locations shutting down. NatWest will close five branches, while Lloyds and Bank of Scotland will each close two. Barclays will close one branch. This brings the total number of closures in 2025 to 88, compared to 170 in the same period last year. Since January 2015, UK banks have closed about 6,293 branches, which is roughly two branches each day over the past decade. This represents a 63% decrease from the number of branches that were open in 2015. Many more closures are planned, with 282 set for 2025. As more people use online banking, fewer customers visit physical branches, prompting banks to reduce their number. Barclays has closed the most branches overall, followed by NatWest and Lloyds. In contrast, Nationwide has the fewest closures and 606 branches still open. They plan to maintain their presence in all towns until at least 2028. For those affected by these closures, alternatives exist. Basic banking can be done at nearby Post Offices, which have tools to find the closest location. Some banks provide mobile banking services by bringing a bus to communities. Additionally, new super ATMs are being introduced, allowing customers to perform tasks like withdrawing money and making deposits. Banking hubs are also being opened, aimed at helping those impacted by branch closures. These hubs, operated by the Post Office, will offer a range of services, from routine banking transactions to support for more complex banking needs. By the end of 2025, 250 of these hubs are expected to be available across the UK.
