Elecom introduces eco-friendly sodium-ion mobile batteries
Elecom has launched the world's first sodium-ion mobile battery. This new battery, called the DE-C55L-9000BK and DE-C55L-9000LGY, has a capacity of 9,000 mAh. It is designed to be more environmentally friendly and safer compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. The sodium-ion battery is bulkier and heavier, weighing about 350 grams. This weight is similar to many 20,000 mAh lithium-ion power banks. Despite its size, it boasts many features, including multiple USB outputs and support for fast charging. It can also operate in extreme temperatures, ranging from -35°C to 50°C. One of the key advantages of this battery is its longevity. It can last up to ten times longer than standard lithium-ion batteries, potentially exceeding a decade with regular use. Furthermore, it reduces the risk of fires, a common concern with lithium batteries, by being stable in challenging conditions. However, the sodium-ion battery comes at a higher price. It retails for about 9,980 yen, approximately $67, even after a temporary discount. This cost may deter some users, especially since sodium-ion technology is still new and not widely adopted. Additionally, the battery is made from recycled materials, which helps decrease reliance on harmful mining practices. However, it does not yet have Japan’s PSE certification, and disposal may be problematic as it isn’t part of standard recycling programs. Users will need to seek local disposal options. In summary, while Elecom’s sodium-ion battery offers many benefits, its price and size could limit its appeal to some consumers.
