Election Commission to collaborate on updating voter list
The Election Commission announced on Thursday plans to improve the voter registration process. This will be done in partnership with authorities that handle birth and death registrations. The goal is to keep the voter list accurate and up to date. The commission will start technical discussions about linking the voter list with Aadhaar numbers, which are unique identification numbers in India. They aim to eliminate duplicate registrations across the country within three months. The commission highlighted that each voter can only cast their ballot at their designated polling station. They also noted that any changes to the voter list must follow a legal appeal process. However, few appeals were made after a recent revision of the voter list, with only 89 initial appeals filed. Additionally, the commission will engage with approximately 5,000 election officials and political parties to resolve issues at the local level. Regular meetings will be held to discuss election matters. The Election Commission also plans to enhance training for about one crore election officials to improve their skills. After Gyanesh Kumar became the chief election commissioner, the commission focused on facilitating a better voting experience for all electors. Other measures include ensuring no polling station has more than 1,200 voters and that they are within two kilometers of voters' homes. The commission is also working to set up polling stations in large residential areas to encourage greater participation. Political parties have responded positively to the commission's offer to train their representatives on the electoral process. The Election Commission emphasized that these new initiatives aim to involve all stakeholders and enhance the electoral process.
