Electric cars dominate nominations for World Car Awards
Electric cars are leading the nominations for the World Car Awards in 2025. Two of the three finalists for the overall World Car of the Year Award are all-electric models. The third car can run on petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, or all-electric power. Kia’s EV3 and Hyundai’s Inster are both nominated for the top award, marking their strong presence in the electric vehicle market. BMW’s X3 completes the shortlist. In recent years, electric vehicles have won five out of the last six overall awards. Kia’s EV9 took the title last year, while Hyundai’s models won in 2022 and 2023. Both the Kia and Hyundai are also nominated for the World Electric Vehicle Award, alongside the Porsche Macan. The EV3 is in the running for World Car Design of the Year, competing against the new Toyota Land Cruiser and all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz. The Inster is nominated for the World Urban Car Award, with competition from the MINI Cooper Electric and BYD’s Seagull/Dolphin Mini, marking BYD's first nomination. The World Luxury Car Award nominees feature electric models such as the Volvo EX90 and new Porsche Macan. The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, and BMW M5 are in the mix for the World Performance Car category. Winners of the 2025 World Car Awards will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on April 16. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the awards presented at this event, coinciding with the show's own 125th anniversary. Mark Schienberg, president of the New York Auto Show, expressed excitement about the upcoming awards and congratulated the finalists.
