Electric vehicle sales in Ireland decline for ninth consecutive month as EU tariffs take effect
Electric vehicle sales in Ireland have dropped for the ninth month in a row, with a 16% decrease in October compared to 2023. Year-to-date sales are down about 25%. Electric vehicles now make up nearly 14% of the market. The decline coincides with new European tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, which took effect recently. These tariffs can reach up to 35% and aim to address market imbalances caused by Chinese government subsidies. Most new registrations occurred in Dublin and Cork, while Cavan saw the largest percentage drop in sales. Experts note that Ireland's sales decline is unusual compared to other EU countries, raising concerns about meeting climate targets.
