Ellen Deegan, a 19-year-old from Stradbally, Ireland, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma when she was 15. She first noticed something was wrong when she felt unusually tired. A visit to the doctor revealed a lump on her neck, which led to her cancer diagnosis after a CT scan. Before starting chemotherapy, Ellen was advised to freeze her eggs to protect her fertility. This service is part of a program funded by the Irish Cancer Society, which helps young cancer patients prepare for their treatment. Ellen found the egg-freezing experience intense but essential. With her mother’s support, she completed the procedure before beginning six months of chemotherapy. During her treatment, Ellen faced tough challenges, including hair loss and severe fatigue. She completed her chemotherapy in September 2021 and was able to transition back to school, although it was a difficult adjustment for her. Ellen returned for a second round of egg freezing in September 2024. This time, she managed the injections herself and found the experience emotionally taxing. Despite the struggles, she feels she has grown from the experience and is now cancer-free. Ellen is currently studying English and geography at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick and is excited about a teaching placement in Spain. She reflects positively on her journey and believes it has shaped her into a better person. The Irish Cancer Society’s Childhood Cancer Fertility Project relies on funding from events like Daffodil Day, which is vital for supporting various cancer services. This year's Daffodil Day is on March 28, with a fundraising goal of €5.9 million.
